Porsche x Backspin
what we did
awarded at:
The 50th anniversary of Hip Hop was a huge deal and an important cultural event worldwide. From Cool Herc’s original party in the 70s up until now, Hip Hop has continued to be an integral and influential part of pop culture and society as a whole.
how we did it
Germany's leading Hip Hop institution, Backspin, knew this and decided to go big with the third edition of their Back2Tape YouTube series. They teamed up with the one and only Porsche, which led to Germany’s leading Hip Hop journalist, Niko Backspin, driving around the US to the places where it all began, in a Porsche Taycan (that rhyme was unintentional… or was it?). The journey took him to New York, LA and Atlanta where he met with and interviewed the likes of DJ Muggs, Xzibit, Karl Kani, TI, Tony Touch, Speech and Statik Selektah, who all gave us their take on how their scenes, or hip hop as a whole, started. He also spoke with graffiti artists, breakdancers, collectors and even a Hip Hop therapist, to add a different perspective to the music they/we all know and love.
We at Blut had an amazing time working with them on this project. Together with the lovely people at Faktor 3, we made the music (over 25 different beats), recorded Niko’s voiceover, created the Atmos and the Taycan sound design and then mixed 100 Minutes of music, voice and sound design together. To make the beats authentic, we often sampled our own music or made new recordings with vintage equipment that we then cut into the tracks. For us it was definitely a passion project. You’ve seen the trailer, now check out some of the beats we made for each of the cities:
