Unleash your adventurous spirit as we delve into the sonic world of GORE-TEX. Together with lead agency AKQA we transformed the captivating sounds of GORE-TEX custom testing machines into an industrial-inspired drum kit, creating a powerful composition that captures the spirit of adventure.
how we did it
GORE-TEX. No, it’s not an abbreviation for Texas Chainsaw Massacre (although it very well could be!). As you probably know, it’s a world-renowned developer of products and technologies for adventurous, outdoorsy types. How do they know that their innovative products can handle the extreme elements their users put them through? Well they simulate these conditions in an underground lair, with custom-made testing machines that push the products to their limits. It just so happens that machines like these make some pretty cool noises. So cool in fact, that one might even be inclined to make music out of them…
Yes, you guessed it! That’s what we did. During the top secret video shoot, conducted by the wonderful folk at Bubbles Film, we went into the GORE-TEX underground lair (which may or may not actually be underground) and recorded as many sounds and fancy machines as we could. These sounds were then turned into into one-shot samples and loops, essentially creating what we like to refer to as the GORE-TEX drum kit. The industrial flavour of this drum kit inspired the industrial flavour of the composition. Driving and rhythmic pulses and beats to represent the innovative testing machines, combined with epic orchestral elements to represent the epic outdoor elements in which GORE-TEX users conquer mountains and valleys alike.

But our newly developed drum kit wasn’t only used for the music. Change the name “drum kit” into “custom made sound library” and we had a basis for the spot's cinematic sound design. A bit of help with some extra sounds may have been needed, but the result is satisfyingly interwoven amalgamation where we’re not sure where the music stops and where the sound design begins. Oh, and the final mix was also our doing.
